[Formate] New version of Formate - 2.15.14. SMTP timeout can now be Set in SMTP Options. Default value remains 30 seconds . Inforouter Scan Station - Adobe Reader Compatibility

*UPDATE 10.12.12 - This problem appears to be isolated and can not be reproduced, and so has been placed on observation status (pca)*

[Inforouter] Currently a problem with Inforouter Scan Station when Adobe Reader 11 is installed is being investigated. The problem has been seen in Windows 7 64 bit only currently, means pdfs can not be viewed in the Scan Station. It is possible that other comninations of Reader 11 and Windows OS's will also manifest the problem, so currently it is advised not to use Adobe 11 on client machines running Scan Station. (pca)

Microsoft Windows XP and Office 2003

Althought we all know that Microsoft have stopped mainstream support for Windows XP and Office 2003, they have confirmed extended (limited) support until April 8, 2014.

At Document Genetics it is still true that some of our products are compatible and can be installed on XP, or utilise Office 2003, however from 1st January 2013 we will not create new installations with these products, and from 31st December 2013 we will cease support of any systems installed on XP or utilising Office 2003.

Full Text Search of PDFs within Inforouter

[Inforouter] If full text search of searchable pdfs is required within Inforouter there needs to be an pdf ifilter installed for MS Index Server to use.

 This can be obtained by;

1. Installing Adobe Reader  versions 7.0 - 9.5 on the Inforouter server - installs pdf viewer and ifilter,
or,
2. Installing Adobe ifilter 6.0 (32 bit) standalone ifilter install,  (does not provide a pdf viewer on the server)
or
3. Installing Adobe 64 bit standalone ifilter install  (does not provide a pdf viewer on the server)

All of the above are available from the Adobe website.

4. Purchase the Foxit ifilter and install.

Please Note that Adobe Reader X and 11 do not install an ifilter and will remove a previously installed Adobe ifilter, and so should is NOT recommended for use on the actual Inforouter Server directly.  If you do install Adobe X or 11 or upgrade them at anytime on the Inforouter server, then you will need to manually install/re-install an ifilter afterwards. Formate and Windows 8

[Formate] No version of formate will be certified for use with Windows 8, until the completion of a compatibiltiy trial.

Until the results of this testing are published, no Formate installation should be installed on Windows 8 in a live production environment, as it will not be possible to offer support for this combination in the interim. (pca)

Formate; Windows Language for non-Unicode programs

[Formate]  Until formate v2.15.6 Formate's working pages files used a single character to identify where one item ends and the next starts. It does this by placing a special separator character between the items, which has to be a character that won’t appear within the items themselves or it would be mistakenly seen as a separator. This meant that an unusual character had to be chosen.

The chosen character has worked well for quite some time, but It has now been found that if the “Language for non-Unicode programs” option in the operating system’s regional settings is set to something other than UK English (e.g. Polish), the special character is automatically converted into a different character by Windows when it’s written to the “.tfp” file, presumably in an attempt to make it fit into the character set for the selected language. Unfortunately, this means that when the file is loaded in order to display or print the contents, the separator characters aren’t recognised and the file appears to be corrupt. This often results in a “DisplayPage” error, usually a “Type Mismatch”.

The “Use Extended TFP Separator” checkbox has been added to resolve this issue. When it’s not ticked, the original single character separator is used and Formate works exactly as it previously did. When it is ticked, however, a new multi-character separator string is used which contains characters that are likely to be available in most languages and so will generally not be converted into something else by Windows. It’s because common characters are used that the new separator has to be multi-character so that it can be a combination of characters which is extremely unlikely to appear in the data; if it were a single character as before but the character was a common one such as say an exclamantion mark, the first time a Form Type produced text containing an exclamation mark it would cause an error.

This leads to the disadvantage of using the new multi-character separator, which is that the “.tfp” files will be slightly larger and take slighty longer to read and write. In practice this probably won’t make a noticeable difference, but it does mean that the recommended approach is to always use the old separator (i.e. with the checkbox not ticked) so that the best performance is achieved, and this will work on the majority of systems, even in many cases where a non-UK-English language is selected for non-Unicode programs. The checkbox should only be ticked if problems arise which you find are cured by ticking it.

Formate (v2.15.13) and Alchemy V9 - Approval

[formate] Formate and Alchemy V9 Approval

First phase testing has now been carried out which has confirmed the compatibility of Formate v2.15.13 and Alchemy V9. Testing was carried out on a Windows 2008 R2 (64 Bit) Server. This approval is not extended to any previous versions of formate, and there are no plans for previous versions of formate to be tested against Alchemy V9 at this time. (pca)

Previewer.AutoPrint Error

[Formate]This entry refers to the "Previewer.AutoPrint Error" as shown in the Formate Event Log.

When generating PDF documents Formate requires access to your printer driver regardless of whether the PDF document is to be printed, emailed or just saved to disk.  If you are receiving the "Previewer.AutoPrint Error" then Formate cannot gain access to the print driver.

Cause

The most likely causes of this problem are:
  • security permissions have changed for the printer
  • the printer has been reinstalled with an incompatible driver
  • the driver has been updated manually
  • Windows Update has modified the printer driver
NOTE:  At the time of writting this entry we were receiving a high level of reports from Formate users getting this error following a Windows update.

Fix
This issue can be resolved by:
  • Selecting a different printer within Formate
  • Uninstall the updated print driver and reinstall the original print driver

Formate Server Ports called "Formate"

[Formate] Formate's print monitor subsystem creates ports for association with virtual printers in the Windows Printer folder all called "Formate-XXX" where "XXX" is the name given at creation.

Please ensure that no ports exist within the windows spooler on the server with the formate print monitor installed that have a name starting "Formate". Any such port not created by the Formate print monitor wizard will corrupt the print monitor and prevent it working. (pca)

InfoRouter Content Search on MS Excel Documents

[InfoRouter] There is a known Microsoft issue which occurs when Service Pack 2 is applied to Microsoft 2003 Server. MS Index Server will index the content of an Excel file but will only create an index catalog of the textual and not the numerical content i.e. spreadsheet cells containing numbers cannot be searched upon whereas those containing text are fine and will return a search result.

A hotfix is available at the URL http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915800/en-us/

Important: Once the hotfix is applied you will need to perform a full rescan of the InfoRouter 'WHINDEX' index server catalog to ensure that Excel documents already in InfoRouter are indexed correctly. (jho)

Formate - Printer Definitions

[Formate] Normally in Formate you will just select a printer from the drop-down list and print to it, but did you know that you can also create an associated Printer Definition?  This will modify the job being sent ot the printer subtle ways. You can force mono prints, thicken lines, do font adjustments etc. Look up Printer Defintions in the formate help for a lot more info. (pca)

Formate House Keeping

[Formate] House keeping, is vital for the smooth operation of any Server, and Formate is no different. During processing Formate creates a number of temporary files in addition to any files intentionally kept, and also populates its event log. A regime of keeping things tidy will be beneficial and could prevent a problem in the future. If you want a copy of the Formate House Keeping guide please contact the help desk. (pca)

Mail Enable pre-installed on a Windows 2008 R2 Server

[Inforouter] If MailEnable has already been installed on your server as it's simple SMTP based mail server it will conflict with the required basic Windows Inforouter SMTP server. If you are not going to use Mail Enable as the SMTP server, then Inforouter will use the traditional Windows SMTP server available in the IIS 6.0 Manager. This will not start if Mail Enable is already installed and running, as it will be unable to bind to the SMTP port. Either Mail Enable should be uninstalled via the Control Panel|Add/Remove programs wizard or the Mail Enable SMTP Connector Service should be disabled. (pca)

Installing InfoRouter LDAP Authentication on Windows 2008

[Inforouter] Installing InfoRouter LDAP Authentication on Windows 2008

The InfoRouter LDAP authentication runs as a web service on any domain PC. It is common however to install it on the server where InfoRouter is installed.

In the [drive]\InfoRouter\ProgramSetups\LDAP Authentication Web Service\ folder is a PDF file called ‘infoRouter_LDAP_Authentication.pdf’. This document details how the website/virtual directory is created using the contents of the above folder.

On page 3 of the document there is the line shown below;

3. Give the website or virtual directory a name like “IRAuthenticationSrv ”

If you chose the ‘virtual directory’ option you may find that you cannot access the web service http://<servername>/<irauthenticationserviceVirtualDir>/irAuthenticationSrv.asmx

If you go to IIS 7.0 and expand the ‘Default Web Site’ tree locate the ‘Virtual Directory’ and right click then select the ‘Convert to Application’ option. You should now be able to access the web service. (JHO)

LPD Issue with Server 2008 64Bit R2

[Formate] As we have all known ever since Windows 2000 there has been a data truncation issue in Windows Server, with data coming via LPR/LPD being wrapped at column 80, regardless of paper setting within the printer. More information can be found in the MS KB article 150930.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/150930

It has been found that this problem persists in Windows Server 2008, and although the OS is not referenced directly in the knowledge base article it is still applicable [pca - with thanks to BG/AW]
